Choose by outcome
Start with useful woodworking projects for everyday function, gift projects for a finished piece with a recipient in mind, furniture projects for larger household builds, or workshop projects for the shop itself.
Choose by scope
A small project can be satisfying without becoming a miniature version of a major furniture build. Think in terms of part count, stock preparation, joinery, finishing, and setup rather than dimensions alone.
Choose by time
Use one-day projects when you want a contained session and weekend projects when a little more assembly, glue-up, or finishing time is welcome.
Choose by learning goal
If the finished object matters less than what the build teaches, start with skill-building projects. Pick a project that gives one or two techniques enough repetition to become familiar.
Then choose the plan
Once you have a project family in mind, move to woodworking plans. The plan should reduce uncertainty, not merely give the project a name.
